Sattendru Maarudhu Vaanilai depicts two people who marry before they are given the chance to receive approval, criticism, or intercession from the world around them. A playful orphan, and a runaway minister's daughter, are brought together by improvised emotional decision making. Although the initial feeling of a liberating romance is refreshing, the realities of survival quickly take dominance. Financial struggles become overwhelming, and the contrast between hopeful romance, and difficult daily routines become impossibly noticeable. Simultaneously, their marriage also has the effect of positioning them to be actively targeted by dangerous adversaries, including the corrupt politicians, and envious people who see their delight as a threat, or an opportunity. As the pressure becomes overwhelming, the married couple is compelled to deal with open mysteries, and concealed truth of the situation, which is even more dangerous. The film portrays love not as a fantasy and an escape, but as a choice that can be made many times, under pressure and uncertainty. It uses drama and tension to say that devotion is most valuable when it is against the oppression of poverty and persecution.
