The plot is unique and has so much gravity that you will want to watch to see how the main characters will band together to defend against a foe that is infinitely stronger than them.

Director Joko Anwar has a plan for the horror elements of his films. From the audience ratings, we can see that this is a strength for the film. It has a horrifying aesthetic that is both grotesque and beautiful. Not many films can disgust you and captivate you at the same time. But Ghost in the Cell does just that. What makes its style even more impressive is when you see how all of the elements come together to create a claustrophobic and menacing world. The performances from the cast members including Abimana Aryasatya, Bront Palarae, and Dimas Danang, are a huge help in creating the fear and the dark humor for the prison story. They are the embodiment of the struggle and the changing loyalties that happen when people are in an enclosed space. With all the supernatural elements, they create a real desperation in the viewers. It is really impressive how uncompromising the depictions of violent acts are. However, the representation of violence and the breaking of order are a representation of a feral and real world struggle for existence that are themes that will draw viewers in and inspire them long after the viewing of the film ends.

Midfield Mayhem and Missed Penalties: Where the Game Shifts

While I appreciate how Ghost in the Cell begins, it’s like watching a team dominate the first half, but I also see moments where the other team has their chances to make a comeback. I give the movie credit for using a combination of horror and dark comedy to lighten the situation, but I have some criticism on the balance of political satire and messages that I feel the movie tries to cover, and some of the audience feedback says that those messages delivered are just too on the nose. It’s like a public service announcement, and even though it’s a great attempt to make the movie have a positive message, it loses that immersion for the audience. I also felt the same way about a number of scenes in the third act of the movie. There are also a number of the audience members that seemed to feel the narrative becomes less interesting, which makes me realize the movie loses potential to reach the championship potential. The movie is really good at setting a terrifying atmosphere and a build-up that is clever, but that atmosphere and build up doesn’t really have a satisfying payoff.

This is engrossing supernatural horror mixed with the real world gritty and desperate prison break out films. This has plenty of energy and shock factors to sustain your attention. This is a film you’ll want to check out. This is violent, dark, and will leave an impression. The redemption of the final act doesn’t salvage the ending but overall this is a very good film. This is a solid win for any horror fan looking for some dark humor.
