When the lights go up on Hadestown, it’s obvious the casting director knew what they were doing. The pitch is loaded with some crazy singers and I mean like some REAL crazy singers. For example, the dude playing Orpheus, Reeve Carney, has like a soul-breaking voice that seriously (and like, for real) would charm the Gods. Like, the dude is just gorgeous, almost like the whole show is a dream he is having. But Eva Noblezada, for sure, though, as Eurydice, like just owns the spotlight. Her gritty, human performance makes her choices and struggles so believable and real. You can feel her fear, her struggle, and her hope. And, like, God only knows how Hermes is that presence in this show, but André De Shields has to be like, the favorite actor of the entire cast, really. His awesome magnetism, engaging all the audience with his every move, is pretty much the definition of showmanship. Plus, like, he really sets the scene. Seriously, the hype around the ensemble is warranted and justified. You can feel the energy the whole cast is bringing. And like the rhythm and vibrancy of the show itself really makes it valuable. I mean, the blends of jazz and folk and really everything makes this show what it is. Also, kudos to Brett Sullivan on the live performance capture, because everything is still concise and crisp, but maintains an energy and captures a performance that is so commanding. The entire show is so engaging.

The highs are incredible with moments where the ensemble is a raw and powerful chorus or where the performers sing and pierce the industrial underworld. The transitions of the world above and the underworld are entertaining and really cool due to stagecraft that translates well to the screen because of the great camera work. The live capture brings the audience to the shows in a way that shows the performers' emotions and small interactions the audience can't always see from the audience. As is expected with any live show, filmed theater becomes overwhelming at times, but the theater side wishes there was a way to recreate the larger and more immersive presences a theater audience live and in the moment can bring. Overall, audience members enjoyed the show, largely due to stage clarity and seamless aplomb, but sizes of theatrical presence from the audience and immersive stage design can still feel lacking.

It does an amazing job of using its format to consistently surprise the audience with gut-wrenching and beautiful moments of theatre and sublime music.
