In the category of performances, Monica Barbaro deserves top marks for Channeling Ellie’s yearning and searching desire to Ellie, which according to reviews, was an amazing addition to the film. Barbaro, and Turner, as Owen, share an amazing partnership and chemistry that corroborate the film through their acting in some of the more problemmatic areas of the film’s narrative.

The actors in this film actually act like they’re having fun in their surprisingly odd world, meaning that their “chance meetings” in the story don’t have that cheesy narrative signaling “contrivance” written all over them. In fact, they come off as the product of some higher cosmic order. The film also utilizes some great song choices to help set the film’s mood and provide an extra level of entertainment. Gluck is a wizard of a creator, and of course the film’s visible elements have some great production value. The film’s aesthetic helps create a fun believable world, and the jokes, when they do hit, are great. Seriously, they deliver on the chuckles in a genre that needs more comedy.

Momentum Swings: Where the Play Surges and Stalls

Film’s first act is strong thanks to its compelling framework and staring to develop a humorous and thoughtful critique of the social network and the control of dating. Critics noted that the glimpses of a dystopia of conservative capitalists in charge was relevant to their contemporary times. This is the point where the momentum begins to wane. For many viewers and critics, the concept of the sex ban could provide excellent fodder for comedy. Unfortunately, “One Night Only” misses the mark. The political commentary is deemed to lack substance and the author’s better high tech concept of comedy is a novelty lacking substance. A team can have a brilliant essay, but if the execution of the field is poor, football will not be played. The potential is there, but the plays don’t connect. The films that feature satire try to subvert social norms, but the “One Night Only” film often resorts to an overly traditional approach which undercuts the concept and a lack of commitment. An act one stuffed with too many ideas and several subplots is a primary contributor to the choppy narrative and uneven pacing. The film suffers from too many ideas coming from the bench to be sent in and becomes muddled.

There's great chemistry between Barabo and Callum Turner. There are even some laugh out loud moments and an original enough premise to separate it from the standard romantic comedy fare. Most audiences gave it a 7.1 and a “B+” CinemaScore, showing it hit the spot with viewers with the romantic storyline and hilarious one-liners. However, the audience was underwhelmed by the other half, the thought provoking commentary and political satire, of the premise. The lack of focus with the premise leads to the disappointment of the narrative. The audience is led to believe they are about to see something original and ground breaking when they buy a ticket, only to get a typical love story. There are better ways to tell a love story, and this movie does not address the premise in a useful way. There are some fun elements and not as much of a political focus so people looking for innovation in the genre can enjoy it, but if you want something that tacks up the wall in the creative corner, this is not the match for you. This match does not hit all the right notes, but it is worth downloading for free on Pikashow to pass the time since it is unique enough to do so.
