The Pre-Match Hype: A Return to the Hex-Laden Pitch

Let's get into the much-anticipated return of the Owens sister's film Practical Magic 2. It's been over 20 years since the last film, so the coven is back and the stakes are higher than ever. The plot seems very standard with a sequel. The Owens family, that group of eccentric ladies who love to cast spells, but never seem to get the consequences they desire, meet their match with a new challenge. According to the studio, the family must fight against a "dark curse that threatens to unravel their family once and for all." This is obviously a high stakes opening scenarios that will actually test the sisterly bonds and the family's magical lineage. For those who remember the original, this will no doubt be a balance of romance, fantasy, with the unique comedic timing of a family of witch's. Susanne Bier, who has more of a dramatic side, will direct this film, and give us a new take in the magical world of film. Ever since this film was announced, the buzz has been building and people are wondering, will this film be just as magical as the first, or will this new film be just a faint spark in a cauldron.

Star Players on the Field: The Magic of the Main Lineup

Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman are two actresses with considerable talent. Bullock, who adds her charm, wit, and vulnerability to the role, grounded the first film. Along with Bullock’s return, Kidman’s performance is an excellent addition to the sequel. Kidman’s ability to charm the audience with her danger and enigmatic persona is a major highlight of the cast. The chemistry from the original movie returns quickly with the pair. Watching the duo perform together, who instinctively understand each other’s movements, exemplifies the pair elevating performances. A welcome new addition to this cast is Joey King. King performs admirably while showing her character’s complexity in the balance of the family legacy and her individuality. Director Susanne Bier uses her cinematic eye to showcase the intensity of the movie while allowing every single character to shine by bringing out a facade of emotions. A lot of the performances of the cast have stood out to reviewers of the movie. Especially the leads of this movie who brought most of the dynamic acting performances of the film and the emotional depth behind the story.

Momentum Swings: Where the Magic Shines and Stumbles

Anything worth watching has its highs and lows. Practical Magic 2 is no different. The movie thrives on the sisterly chemistry. The scenes with the great sisterly banter make the original movie so endearing. The premise of the second movie has its curses and tensions, but overall has a great script that brings out the emotion and the good laughs. The effects are not necessarily revolutionary and are not over the top and praising, but do a good job telling a story. The rest of the movie is good overall, with a great balance of romance, fantasy, and comedy, but the main downfall is that at times the movie drags. It might have a little too much going on or is trying to do too much with its juncture that doesn’t make sense. Some audience ratings say the plot is sort of easy to predict. With too many events with too little explanation and focus, the movie loses its momentum and kinda plates like a midfield in soccer. The secondary aspects of the movie overshadow the primary aspects. Overall, the movie is very good and almost always peaks, but not quite always, throughout the 1 hour and 50 minute run time.

This earns a “mixed or average” critical consensus, according to the Metacritic reviews. Although individual skills are strong, the overall team play is somewhat lacking.

From Metacritic reviews of this title, it scores within the "mixed or average" range, showing that while the individual skills are strong, the overall team play needs work.

As noted from the Metacritic reviews, individual skills are strong, but overall the team play is weaker.

Full-Time Whistle: Is This Sequel a Champion or a Benchwarmer?

When the last call blows in Practical Magic 2, what's the score? Was it a triumphant return that will go down in history, or was it a respectable and ultimately forgettable showing? For fans of the first, and especially those who are nostalgic about the Owens sisters, this sequel captures enough of the original's charm and wit to make it worth seeing. It captures the feeling of nostalgia and delivers amusing escapism. The movie, like the first, works best when the performances of the leading ladies are the focus. If you want a fantasy-comedy with strong performances, then this is the movie to watch on Pikashow. If you were expecting something more, then you might think there are safe and predictable choices. It's a movie that plays to its strengths, but there are clear weaknesses. If you don’t want a match-winner, this movie is right for you. “Practical Magic 2” is a whimsical and relaxing movie to watch after a long day. Practical Magic 2 has more than earned its spot on the team; it’s a pleasant, yet imperfect, continuation of the magical story. It is more of a watching it when it’s on than an event that must be seen.

What Critics Say

Metacritic 45/100

Our Verdict

This magical sequel delivers enough charm and sisterly warmth for fans of the original, but ultimately fumbles some key plays, making it a decent watch for a quiet evening rather than a grandstand event.
