As if this were not enough conflict, high school has many pitfalls for emotions, and these two are under the microscope of family, friends, and classmates who all have some secret and unknown "reasons to separate the lovers". More so, this isn't a story of school crushes, but of resisting a whole offensive line to defy all odds to be together. The audience is promised, successfully, 2 hours and 14 minutes of relationship conflicts and epic dramaticy. Creative relationship drama films absolutely thrive in a world with an audience in the emotional grandstands, which is where this film absolutely will have it's audience.

The Star Players: Chemistry on the Pitch

The leads of a romance carry the film, be it a stellar performance or one to forget. In “Your Heart Will Be Broken,” Daniel Vegas as Bars and Veronika Zhuravleva as Polina need to deliver for the film. They need to pull off the shift and growth of their characters for a cynical and pragmatic ‘ arrangement’ to develop into something meaningful and real. We have to buy the initial reluctance of the two, and then spot the development of their emotional relationship. This is a far from a typical love story, so we need nuance. We need to be able to tell the shift from being hard to Bars’ vulnerability, and Polina’s strength in the relationship. Their chemistry is the foundation of the story, and the supporting cast with the presence of Ivan Trushin is likely the presence of an antagonist or a catalyst, and the other forces of conflict to the central coupling. The work Mikhail Vaynberg, the director, put in would have had a lot to do with the performance prep work, as the emotional beats and the foundation of “fake” to “real” are essential in performing these characters. This ensemble gives us everything we need for a performance.

Momentum Swings: Navigating the Emotional Playbook

Every match has its ups and downs and so does “Your Heart Will Be Broken.” The trope of the fake relationship in this story gives you the potential for high and low moments. However, with the right dialogue and unique character development, this can be a map for really great storytelling. Fake dates, unintended dates, accidental intimacies, actresses or actors, even characters that aren't attracted to each other but find out they are. This approach can be done in a way that the story also doesn't fall into an unrealistic hallmark card fake relationship 'will they/won’t they.’ 2 hours and 14 minutes is a long time for a high school romance and this can be an advantage for “Your Heart Will be Broken” in that they can cover a substantial amount of character motivation and fleshing out the Polina and Bars relationship. If other high school romances have taken 12-15 minutes to show a relationship arc, this one can show the true complexities of the deal and what it brings emotionally. If the pacing isn’t good, this can lead to moments of feeling like the film could end without being a push to the final act. Other characters in the film need to be used to their full extent. Do the other characters ‘reasons to separate the lovers’ drive the story and help develop the characters in an organic way, or do they feel fake and forced? The book's success will live and die by the audience’s reaction throughout the emotional story.

The Full-Time Scoreline: A Heartfelt Draw or a Decisive Victory?

They aren’t seeking to reinvent the romance genre, but rather come up with a story that has all the right emotions and elevates the genre. The story has all the right components for a tug-on-the heart-strings story about growing up. The combination of high school drama, a fake relationship that turns real, and outside pressure, makes a nice foundation. Daniel Vegas and Veronika Zhuravleva’s chemistry on-screen, especially the developing chemistry, is something a lot of viewers are looking forward to. The storyline, even with the overly used clichés, and the used plot, clichéd external conflicts, are a double edge sword, because with such a long run time a lot of the audience will lose interest, but the development of the character and their journeys will be explained and fleshed out. Even with the same clichés as other romances and the lack of originality in external conflicts, this is still a great choice for someone looking for a good, emotional, and compelling high school romance with chemistry.
