Kick-Off: The Unsuspecting Playmaker

Okay, this is Average Joe. I’m not going to lie, this has more plot twists than a last minute penalty shootout. We first meet Joe Washington, an average blue collar plumber. He may be average, but he has a normal life, well until his dad passes. There was a secret his dad was keeping that he kept from Joe, and from the rest of the family and most of the world. Joe’s dad wasn’t just fixing leaky faucets, he was stealing, and not just stealing from the corner store, he was stealing millions from some very dangerous people. Now those dangerous people want Joe. The show has you right in the deep end as the first scene is a near fatal attack on Joe. Now the entire cast has to scramble out of their quiet and normal lives to find the truth and the stolen money. The premise has you instantly interested in the combination of crime and comedy as you are being chased with no hope of surviving. Audience members are standing and cheering from the moment it starts.

The All-Star Lineup

There are a lot of great actors, and a great actor usually carries a great show. There's no doubt that Average Joe shot up in star power with the introduction of Deon Cole. Cole is a master of balancing repressive vulnerabilities and emerging fierceness, and Deon Cole is the epitome of this. Cole also masters the inner workings of an Everyman (namely a plumber) through the incredible conviction and situational comedy of an action hero and a Everyman. This Joe character might be out of his depth, and Cole grounds Joe as someone you want to root for. Oh, and lets not forget Cole's co-stars Malcolm Barrett and Cynthia McWilliams, whose performances also deserve critical attention, especially by Daniel Fienberg, from The Hollywood Reporter. Together, they form an incredible cast and are also family and friends, whose comedic timing and reactions provide the right emotional beats and stakes as the situation escalates. The show balances the grit of the dark crime world and the humor of the situation frighteningly well. It is a testament to the incredible cast and creative team actually achieving the impossible without breaking balance and tripping.

Game of Two Halves: Surges and Stalls

Even before the first pitch, Average Joe gets off to a storming start. The first courtesy of an exposition shock factor and the implicit, near, constant, danger. The narrative energy never dashes. There’s always the need to know what the next calamity will be for Joe and company. The show is especially great at atmosphere and design, showing a true mastery of horror of a sort, building constant tension only to break it with a Carlton B绝俤. There’s a reason for the comedy, it B绝俤 the atmosphere for the audience in a way nothing else really can. A look into Joe’s father’s (many) lives is a great mystery and a dunthread. The story (and writing) gets to actually shine. Even with a ball of skin of a plot, that’s all it’d be, ‘find the money’. There are, of course, moments of lower energy, the natural ebbs in the flow of a marathon of Joe’s epic adventure. But, really, Joe's beginnings are normal, Joe’s ends are not. The audience has to buy into the unbelievable (and B绝俤) which, of course, is a big ask, and there are a few that would call the unrealistic moments a foul infraction of the laws of probability. Still, Average Joe is addicting.

The Full-Time Scoreline

When it's all said and done, does Average Joe give us a victory or a loss we can only imagine? Even if you haven't heard of this show before, I would still recommend it for people who are looking for a new crime thriller, especially ones that incorporate dark comedy. This show has the reputation of being high quality with many positive reviews. For the most part, ratings from the general public are not released, but I am positive that people will enjoy the storyline because it has a lot of deadly violence and a good underdog plot. This show is worth a watch if you are tired of the same beaten crime shows. This show has great cast and a lot of talent. If you are looking for something to entertain you, but keep you on the edge of your seat then look no further than Average Joe. This show is a solid watch.
