The Pre-Match Setup
Fans, settle in! We are talking about the up and coming adaptation of Robert Louis Stevenson's Treasure Island set for release in 2026. This isn't any adaptation. This is one of the classics, and director Robert Murphy promises a new view of the legendary story. The plot gives a nice summary of what we can expect. Jim is a young lad with a treasure map and is sent on a perilous journey across the Atlantic. Here, he experiences, for the first time in his life, betrayal and violence, including mutiny. This is the true test of a man, and we are led to believe he will be 'forever changed' by the end of his journey. If you enjoy swashbuckling adventure stories, like myself, this gives a great summary of what you can expect to see, which of course includes a lot of action. This series has the potential to be very popular. Fans of Action/Adventure will have a series to look forward to. Again, this is dependent on the execution.
Star Players on the Pitch
Every good team has its superstars. 'Treasure Island' boasts a powerhouse cast. David Oyelowo and Hayley Atwell are best-in-class performers. Oyelowo is one of the best working actors, and he takes on one of the most iconic characters in literature in a way that rewards a deeper exploration of the character. Atwell is also a welcome addition as an incendiary presence that brings nuance to an often-underdeveloped character in the narrative. Tom Sweet's Jim Hawkins takes center stage, and making a three-part series about Jim is no easy task. Especially when you consider Jim's transition from an average bystander to a survivor who has seen it all and more. Beyond the performers, the other aspects of filmmaking take the viewer on a grand adventure, from the intricacies of set design and costuming to capturing the magnificence of the sea and the rolling waves. An ominous score only serves to amplify the suspense and tension aboard the vessel. You can almost feel the cool spray of the sea as you take in the visual spoils of the film.
Momentum Swings and Stalled Plays
The cast of this series alone should have this show skyrocketing in ratings. But, sadly, that's not the case. Sometimes setup can be strong while execution is not. One notable concern is the content rating of TV-PG. With the description promising a "deadly voyage, mutiny, violence and betrayal," TV-PG is somewhat misleading. Is the series holding back? Is there a dilution of what makes the pirate story dangerous? These could definitely be factors contributing to the perceived drop in quality. The series could also be falling flat because of pacing. A series needs strong, constant momentum. There are a lot of elements of classic adventure that need to be balanced with more modern concepts without stripping what made those classic adventures enticing. The trick is to thread the needle with a balance that works. Often a series needs a strong hook at the beginning of each episode in order to engage and keep the audience. If the beginning or middle of the series fails to do this, even the best cast in the world can't pick up the slack.
Full-Time Whistle: Is It a Win?
What’s the final score when the ref blows the whistle on Treasure Island? The production looks good, and the crew did a decent job bringing the story to life. As one of the great adventure stories, there’s opportunity for the adaptation to take some fun, exciting, and realistic turns as an adaptation. While there could have been more, there’s enough for diehard fans of the genre to cheer for. However, there’s a reason why this adaptation has the reputation that it does. A TV-PG rating is enough to get the show, but it has the adverse effect of diluting the edge, the grit and the danger that come with this sort of narrative. Ultimately, it’s an average show that does what it’s supposed to do, just average. The moment it’s over, you won’t find yourself thinking about when the highlights will be aired. If you’re a fan of this genre, there’s better shows out there for you to watch, and if you’re not, Treasure Island will do little to change that.
Pros
- Classic adventure story with enduring appeal
- Strong, recognizable lead cast (Oyelowo, Atwell)
- Promises high-stakes drama and character transformation
Cons
- TV-PG rating may dilute the inherent grit and danger
- Audience ratings indicate a middling overall reception
- Potential for inconsistent pacing or lack of impactful stakes
Our Verdict
Despite a star-studded lineup and a legendary tale, this 'Treasure Island' series struggles to find its rhythm, delivering a performance that’s more exhibition match than championship final.
